Special Mobility Services, Inc. was started in Portland, OR in 1974 and set its roots in Spokane, WA in 1992. The main goal of our company is to provide transportation to and from medical appointments for people with Medicaid.

SMS is the Medicaid transportation broker for Spokane, Ferry, Stevens and Pend Oreille Counties.

SMS is a private non-profit organization.

  • Primary purpose of SMS is to provide transport for elderly, mentally or physically handicapped low-income individuals in the need of medical care through the Washington State Department of Social Health Services Medicaid Program.
  • Transportation resources available include bus passes or public transportation reimbursement, fuel vouchers, mileage reimbursements, volunteer transportation, cabulances, and taxies.

SMS is responsible to determine and contract for the least costly way of getting patients in need of medical help to a facility. SMS currently has 18 contracts in the Spokane area.
